What is Oromo Calendar?
Oromo Calendar is a digital platform built to preserve, educate, and promote the ancient Oromo lunar stellar timekeeping system. It connects traditional Oromo knowledge with modern technology, helping users track Oromo calendar dates, moonrise and moonset times, and cultural festivals. The calendar is calculated using real astronomical moon data based on the latitude and altitude of Finfine (Addis Ababa), the geographic and cultural center of Oromia.
Is the app free to use?
Yes! The calendar, date converter, and moon phases are all free for everyone. The only premium feature is wallpapers. Browsing and downloading the full wallpaper collection requires a subscription.
What does a subscription include?
A subscription gives you access to the full library of high-quality Oromo cultural wallpapers and the ability to download them to your device.
Can I use the app offline?
Yes! The calendar view works fully offline. Downloading new wallpapers requires an internet connection.
Is this app for educational use?
Yes. The calendar, date converter, and wallpapers are all provided for educational and personal use. The app is designed to teach and inspire people to explore Oromo science, timekeeping, culture, and history through an accessible digital experience. Wallpapers are also licensed for personal use, and you can set them as your device background.
How do I subscribe?
In Ethiopia, subscribe in the app or at oromocalendar.com/subscribe with secure payments through Chapa (ETB). Outside Ethiopia, subscribe in the app through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
Can I download wallpapers to use as my phone background?
Yes! With a subscription you can download any wallpaper from the collection and set it as your device background directly from the app.
How do I use my subscription on a new device?
Just sign in with the same account on the app or website. Your subscription is tied to your account and syncs automatically across devices.
What sources were used to build the Oromo calendar?
The calendar logic is grounded in two foundational reference works: Daaniyaa by B. Dhugumaa Eeguu (Addis Ababa University / WADO, published 2006 in Finfine, Oromiyaa), a work in Afaan Oromo on Oromo timekeeping tradition; and Gada: Three Approaches to the Study of African Society by Asmarom Legesse (The Free Press, New York, 1973), the foundational academic work on the Oromo Gada system. Calendar calculations use real astronomical moon data.
Can scholars or developers contribute?
Yes! We believe this project belongs to everyone. Oromo Calendar is open to all who wish to contribute, research, or develop improvements. Scholars, developers, designers, and cultural experts are welcome to join in making the calendar more complete and accurate for future generations. Reach out at oromocalendar@gmail.com.
What happens if my subscription ends?
You keep full access to the free calendar, date converter, and moon phases. Wallpaper browsing and downloads simply pause until you renew.
How can I report an issue or suggest a feature?
